Baptisms

Details of how to request a Baptism in Dalriada Mid Argyll Parish Church

Baptism is considered one of the two recognized sacraments, alongside the Sacrament of Holy Communion. For infant baptism, the Church expects at least one parent or close family member to either be a member or express willingness to become one.

During the baptismal service, these responsible adults profess their faith and commit to providing the child with a Christian upbringing.

In the case of adult baptism, individuals themselves make these promises.

Typically, Baptism is administered during Sunday worship in front of the congregation, emphasizing the sacrament’s significance in incorporating individuals into the body of Christ and the life of the Church. There’s some flexibility in emergencies, such as hospital situations.

Additionally, since 2003, the Church offers orders for the thanksgiving and blessing of a child. The blessing ceremony, similar to Baptism but without water, takes place during morning worship. Unlike Baptism, no specific commitments or beliefs are required from the parents. For more details and a suggested order of service, the Church of Scotland Guide on the blessing of a child provides additional information.
